Answers from Our Arizona Travel Clinic

International travel for leisure and business have become commonplace—and require preparation for health and safety. Travel Vaccines and Wellness Solutions specializes in travel vaccinations, as well as flu shots and corporate wellness. To increase your understanding of both the benefits and risks of vaccines, please read on for answers to some common questions.

Why should I see a travel health professional, instead of my primary care physician?

  • A travel health professional specializes in keeping you healthy on your trip. We stay up to date on world wide
outbreaks and always changing vaccine requirements.
  • Many primary care physicians do not carry immunizations specific to foreign travel,
  • In order to administer the yellow fever vaccine a clinic must be yellow fever certified.
  • In one study, a group of primary care physicians were asked to prescribe immunizations for travel, 20-75% of them gave inappropriate recommendations, frequently misusing yellow fever, typhoid, and measles vaccines.
  • In another study, 20-60% of primary care physicians incorrectly prescribed medication for travelers going to non-risk areas and failed to address chloroquine resistant regions.

Do you provide travel vaccines for adults and children?

Is there a shot for malaria?

No. There is not a vaccine for malaria. Malaria is prevented by taking a preventive medicine either daily or weekly while in a malarious area. One of our travel health experts will recommend the most appropriate malaria medicine for the region you are traveling to, as well as what is most appropriate for you based on your health history.

What Is a Vaccine, Exactly?

A vaccine (or immunization) delivers a harmless pharmaceutical product to your body that, as far as your immune system is concerned, looks like an infectious agent. This triggers an immune response, producing antibodies to the “faked” infection. From this point, your immune system is prepared to recognize and respond to the real disease if you encounter it during your travels. You can read more about this on our Travel Vaccinations page.

I'm Not Sure My Trip Requires Immunizations—Is This Really Necessary?

Regardless of where your travels take you, you will always be exposed to exotic organisms. In many countries around the world, some of these infectious diseases can be very dangerous, even deadly. Please consult with Travel Vaccines and Wellness Solutions to ensure you’re traveling safely and protecting your health.

Do I Need to Make an Appointment?

Yes, appointments are necessary. Vaccinations can require multiple doses over a period of time in order to effectively develop an immune response and safeguard your travel health. Ideally, your appointment should be scheduled four to six weeks prior to going abroad, but its never too late. Call today!

Should I Bring Anything to My Appointment?
