General Wellness Immunization

Adults need routine immunizations too. Immunizations for general wellness and disease prevention are important as we age and our immune system naturally weakens. Most adults do not have all of the recommended immunizations they should to lead a healthy lifestyle.

Every adult should be protected against hepatitis B, hepatitis A, tetanus diphtheria, pertussis, measles, mumps, rubella, pneumonia, influenza, chicken pox, & shingles.

Hepatitis B

This virus is usually spread through blood and other body fluids. However, it can live on surfaces for a long period of time. According to the CDC, hepatitis b virus lives outside the body for up to 7 days. The U.S. routinely immunizes all children & medical workers for hepatitis b.

The vaccine is a 3-dose series, administered over a 6-12 month time period. If you are not sure if you have had the vaccine, there is a simple blood test that can be done to measure your level of antibodies present.

Hepatitis A

Hepatitis A is spread through contaminated food and water. It is spread from person to person through feces. You can be exposed to hepatitis A simply if someone who prepares your food, who has been exposed to hepatitis a, does not wash their hands well. Eating out at restaurants, not washing your fruit and vegetables well can put you at higher risk of being exposed to hepatitis A.

The vaccine is a two-dose series, administered over a 6-month time period. If you are not sure if you have had the vaccine, there is a simple blood test that can be done to measure your level of antibodies present.

Tetanus diphtheria & Pertussis

Tetanus is a bacterial infection that causes rigidity and spasms of the voluntary muscles. Diphtheria can lead to breathing problems, heart failure, paralysis and even death. Pertussis is more commonly referred to as whopping cough. This is spread person to person through secretions from coughing or sneezing.

Most people know a tetanus shot should be administered every 10 years, unless you are injured or travelling outside the U.S., then it needs to be administered every 5 years.

Measles, Mumps & Rubella

This vaccine is a two-dose series for adults. If you are not sure if you have had the vaccine, there is a simple blood test that can be done to measure your level of antibodies present.

Pneumonia

Pneumococcal disease is caused by bacteria that can spread from person to person through close contact. It can cause ear infections, and it can also lead to more serious infections of the lungs (pneumonia), blood, brain & spinal cord (meningitis). Complications from pneumonia can be fatal. If you have asthma or smoke you may be at higher risk.

There are two different vaccines for pneumonia, Pneumococcal Polysaccharide (PPSV23) Pneumococcal Conjugate (PCV13). They protect you against different types of pneumonia. It’s not a question of which one do you need, but when can you get both?

Influenza

An annual flu shot is recommended for everyone 6 months of age and older.

Travel Vaccines & Wellness Solutions carries influenza vaccine year-round.

Chickenpox

This is a common child hood disease. Symptoms can be mild, however in young infants and adults symptoms can be much worse.

This vaccine is a two-dose series for adults. If you are not sure if you have had the vaccine, there is a simple blood test that can be done to measure your level of antibodies present.

Shingles

Shingles is a painful skin rash, often with blisters. It can cause severe pain, fever, headache, chills, and upset stomach. If you have ever had chickenpox, you are at risk for getting shingles. Shingles is more common in people over 50.

SHINGRIX is the new vaccine available to help prevent shingles. It is 97% effective. Available at Travel Vaccines & Wellness Solutions in December of 2017. It is approved for use in people 50 and older. It is a two-dose series, completed in 8 weeks.
